The course and rotation (sequence of numbers above) are given to drivers prior to the first qualifying run. They must memorise the course rotation from the banks before climbing into their boats and attempting to navigate all the turns in the right order. The crews must follow the numbers in the correct sequence to achieve a timed run.
If at any point they go the wrong way, they have the opportunity to return to where they got lost and finish their run correctly. If this is not done, and the course has not been run in the right sequence, then the driver will receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) and no time is given for the run due to a navigational error.
